BLUF
Peace of Pie by Lee Barber is a heartwarming romance about two people finding themselves—and love—later in life.
Why did I read it?
Lee shared the first few chapters of this book in a critique workshop that eventually became our wonderful writing group. Even in its early drafts, I knew this story would be amazing!
What’s it about?
While Bryony is dealing with the death of her mother, her boyfriend leaves her for a much younger woman. Now Bryony is dealing with her brother’s attempts to get her to move in with and take care of their father, when she really wants to be planning for retirement.
Cal prepares to travel the world after retiring from his teaching career, only to end up moving to a small Ohio town to substitute teach for a friend — at the school where Bryony’s brother is the principal.
Bryony and Cal are dealing with unexpected turns in their personal and professional lives when they meet, and growing their relationship brings its own challenges.
What’s the longer review?
It’s pretty clear where Bryony and Cal’s relationship will end up—it’s a romance, after all—but it’s still an enjoyable read and good story while we wait for them to figure out what we already know. Both characters are likable and relatable, and I love that they are later in life.
The other prominent characters in the story range in ages, from high schoolers to seniors in retirement homes. The relationship dynamics between the different characters is interesting and illustrate that we are all human beings, regardless of our age.
One thing I appreciate about Lee’s stories is the way she works in social issues without being obvious or preachy. This story addresses gender roles, as well as expectations of how people should live during each stage of life.
Of course, pie plays a role in the story! Be prepared to be hungry when you read the pie and baking descriptions.
Barber has a lovely writing style that feels like a friend is telling you a story. The characters are memorable and the story is engrossing. Peace of Pie has a Hallmark movie vibe, without the standard plot, making it appeal to both fans and critics of the genre.
